*** BREAKING NEWS ***

Yikes!!! This email just in…

On Saturday, August 27, Charlie Smithgall will kick off the fall campaign with a cannon shoot and family barbecue at his farm in southern Lancaster County.  As you know, the mayor will have a tough race this year, and we could really use your support!

Tickets for this event are $50 each (kids are free), and for $75 more you can shoot a cannon.  To RSVP, please email CharlieSmithgall@aol.com.  Thanks a lot – hope to see you there!”

*** BREAKING NEWS ***

After a lengthy investigation, I have discovered the menu for Democratic mayoral candidate Rick Gray’s “Neighborhood Meet Up” in Nelson Polite’s back yard at 540 North Street from 6-9 p.m. this Thursday:

Entrée             White Meat Chicken in a White Cream Sauce

            Sides               White Toast Points.

White Mashed Potatoes with Cream Gravy

                                    White Asparagus

                                    White Corn

            Desserts         White Chocolate Torte

                                    White Bread Pudding

Oops!  Sorry.  That’s for Mayor Smithgall’s gala at the Hamilton Club!  I’ll keep investigating.

LIGHT BULBS, PARKING & GRAY

LIP News will be on a modified printing schedule for the next several days.  A couple of random thoughts and a random photograph for today.  I posted here several days ago that Mayor Smithgall needed a light bulb (does he ever!).  In honor of that, I am reprinting “How many LNP message board members does it take to change a lightbulb?” from Talkback several years ago.  Yes, I’m certain this has appeared on every message board in the country.  But it’s fun and it’s here.

THE TIPPING POINT

“Looking At Lancaster thanks the Penn Square Partners for being so greedy and obstinate.  Without the PSP’s lack of cooperation, Lancaster might have actually been stuck paying for this fiscal fiasco.  Instead, it is the PSP that has pushed this project beyond the tipping point.  Unless the Penn Square Partners admit they are wrong, and fulfill the original terms they agreed to, it is all downhill from here.”  Artie See on www.lookingatlancaster.com

OH, THE BYRNE!

“The real strength of skepticism is that it will prevent the quest for perfection from driving out the ‘merely’ very good.  Cynics on the other hand are the drivers aiming their cerebral vehicles at a Utopia that cannot happen in a human world.”  Ted Byrne, the Parking Guy, on Talkback.

“PROBLEM SOLVED”

On April 18, 2005 John Spidaliere wrote the article, “Parking not a worry now for center, hotel” in the New Era.  The opening words:  “Problem solved.  ‘There is no parking problem’ for the convention center and hotel, the chairman of the Lancaster City Parking Authority [Ted Byrne] said today.  On July 7, 2005, John Spidaliere of the New Era wrote the article, “W. King site selected for 700-space parking garage.”  The opening words:  “More downtown parking for more shoppers and more tourists.  City Parking Authority officials were expected to introduce designs for a proposed seven-story parking garage in the first block of West King Street today.”  Ted Byrne, went on Talkback the next day, June 8, and for the next two weeks made 79 posts on why a new, seven story parking garage was desperately needed in downtown Lancaster.  Why?  Stay tuned….

SUMMER IN THE CITY

Finally, a picture of Democratic mayoral candidate J. Richard Gray campaigning at the Race Street Block Party from his website, www.grayformayor.com.  Why?  Because I enjoy it, that’s why.

HOW DID THIS MAN BECOME MAYOR?

“Mayor Charlie Smithgall reacted with what could best be described as disgust today at the news of the deal.

‘It’s just another delaying tactic,’ he said.  ‘All this is is delay, delay, delay, try to kill, try to kill, try to kill.’

‘...It just shows they don’t give a darn about the renewal of Lancaster City.  It is another slap in the face to city residents.’”

“County tables suit against hotel project” – New Era, August 4, 2005

You are a slap in the face to city residents, Mayor Smithgall.

 More coming later today…

John M. Spidaliere of the New Era is a disgrace.  His article today is here.  The convention center is dead.  More coming tomorrow.

~ J. Richard Gray, Democratic Candidate for Mayor ~

HOMEOWNERSHIP, LIVABILITY

 & TAX FAIRNESS

Homeownership, improved livability and tax fairness - these are the three major concerns of Lancaster City residents, Democratic Mayoral candidate J. Richard Gray said in a phone interview this morning.  He said people want “safe, quiet and clean neighborhoods.”

LIVABILITY

Gray said he has been going door to door in Lancaster since April.  “It’s been an education for me to walk and see these neighborhoods and meet thousands of wonderful people,” he said.   He said in terms of the city’s livability, the residents are concerned about crime, traffic, noise and litter.  He said Mayor Smithgall’s approach to several of these concerns is to talk about the number of citations that are issued rather than whether the neighborhoods are actually quieter or cleaner.  “You don’t measure success on the number of citations given,” Gray said.  Gray also said people want to see less speeding through their neighborhoods and a walker and user friendly city.

COMPREHENSIVE PLATFORM

Gray will release his complete platform shortly after Labor Day, he said.  It will be a comprehensive program for Lancaster for the next four years and it will address in detail what he will do about the above and other issues.  He said his campaign will also get into full swing after Labor Day.

NELSON, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

In the meantime, he will have a “Neighborhood Meet Up” on Thursday, August 11, in Nelson Polite’s backyard at 540 North Street from 6 to 9 p.m.  State Representative Jake Wheatley will also be there.  When asked about food, Gray hedged like any good politician.  “Well, I think there will be food.  You can’t have all of those people there and no food.  They’ll turn mean.”

Please be assured that LIP News will actively investigate this serious food issue and will report the pertinent details just as soon as they are uncovered.  Stay tuned.

NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN

“Our presence makes a difference. Stand up and speak what is on your mind! The powers-that-be know we are watching, and that they are not free to spend our money recklessly.”

April Koppenhaver in “An Update From April” on www.lancasterfirst.org.  Please go to this site and read the new information posted.

CHECK BACK LATER TODAY.

SHAKE MY HAND, PLEASE!

THE SEARCH CONTINUES

It’s been a busy, busy day.  I have been fielding inquiries all morning, but sadly, we are no closer to finding a person of color willing to be photographed shaking hands with young Gib Armstrong than we were yesterday (see below under “Breaking News”).  So the search goes on and today’s post will be very short as a result.  Several quick notes - tomorrow I will take a serious look at Armstrong’s House Resolution No. 177.  Does his father, old Gib, need company on that train out of Lancaster?   A lengthy email has come in supporting young Gib, and I will print that as well as posting, of course, an update on finding that special person of color willing to shake young Gib’s hand.

POLICE WORK

Have the police caught the armed bank robber from this past Friday?  How about the drive-by shooting where three people were injured not long ago?  Has anyone been charged?  There were two other shootings the same week.  Has anyone been charged?  Do the Lancaster Police solve any crimes?  Do the Lancaster Newspapers ever follow-up on a single story?  Have the police arrested anyone for the murder of Heather Marie Nunn?

RANDOM THOUGHTS

Why doesn’t Franklin & Marshall’s President, John A. Fry, have his PhD.?  Why does G. Terry Madonna, F&M’s “political analyst and pollster,” say stupid things?  I have offered my services as a political analyst.  I can talk about whether issues have “legs.”  Why, oh why, doesn’t anyone call me?

QUACK

Dr. Fraud has never seen a contest he didn’t like.  One of these days you’ll win one, doctor.  You can dream.  “Sweet Dreams” is here.

*** Judge Madenspacher’s opinion in April Koppenhaver’s lawsuit against the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Lancaster is posted here.

~ Penn Square Partners ~

“POTENTIAL PARTIES”

Justin Quinn, the Intell reporter who wrote the story, “Convention center/hotel suit tossed” in today’s paper omitted this from Judge Madenspacher’s Opinion:

“Despite the fact that this project is comprehensive, and other potential parties are Penn Square Partners, the Lancaster County Convention Center Authority, and the City of Lancaster, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, because all of these entities are providing financial support in some way, the fact is they are not named Defendants.”

Funny, Quinn didn’t mention his employer, Penn Square Partners.  It also looks like John Fry, the President of Franklin & Marshall College, who is on the board of the LCCCA, is in line to get sued as well (please see "Where's the Money?" below).

JUDGEMENTS & OPINIONS

NO STANDING

Judge Joseph C. Madenspacher has ruled that April Koppenhaver did not have standing in her lawsuit against the Redevelopment Authority over the purchase of the Watt & Shand building.  More to follow at a later date.

WHERE’S THE MONEY?

In response to my question on this site, “Why was F&M President John Fry in a secret hotel/convention center meeting?” this email in, “I noticed this question on your website this morning.  Maybe it is because he is on the LCCCA board.”  And the writer posted a link to www.lancasterconventioncenter.com and the page where John Fry is listed as a board member and the assistant treasurer.  My response, “Thank you and what a very sensible answer it is and I was at the website you note this morning.  I still don’t think it’s appropriate conduct on the part of the president of a ‘noted’ liberal arts college – just my opinion but then, I’m allowed to have one and if you haven’t noticed, I have quite a few!”  (Thank you for writing).

PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT

Actually, I think there’s more wrong with it than that and I think it’s why Franklin & Marshall College receives preferential treatment from the Lancaster Newspapers and Lancaster officials.  However, for now, there is also this on the convention center website under “Convention Center Project,”  “In January 2000, Lancaster County imposes a 3.9-percent tax on hotel room rentals to generate funding to construct and market a publicly owned convention center.”  Perhaps Mr. Fry, since he is the assistant treasurer, could give us a detailed account of what happened to all of that money.

WE HAVE A BIG PROBLEM - YOU

Senator Gibson E. Armstrong holds a super secret meeting regarding the publicly owned convention center and then breaks the secrecy to try to discredit Commissioner Shellenberger.  The whole thing is just an absolute disgrace.  Enough of Senator Armstrong.  From his website under “Constituent Services” it says, “Let me know your problems.  When you encounter bureaucratic red tape and frustration, tell me about it.”  Tell Armstrong what you think of his secret meetings and his conduct.  Email him at garmstrong@pasen.gov. (You will receive an automatic return email.)

SCAPEGOATS

One Talkbacker posted this under the New Era article, “Secret meeting spurs flap,” “Wow!  Isn’t it funny how things change over a few months.  It just seems like yesterday that Armstrong and his buddies were making the School District of Lancaster the scapegoat for this entire project.  I just wonder who they are going to blame next?  I am sure they will not blame themselves….it always seems to be someone else’s fault.”

CHECK BACK TOMORROW WHEN THERE WILL BE MORE ON ALL OF THIS AND I ROUND-UP THE NEWS.

SEE YA, SENATOR ARMSTRONG!
