Some days I am overwhelmed by the lack of integrity of the Lancaster Newspapers, their reporters and columnists, and the Mayor and G. Terry Madonna and others.Today is such a day.
So, I will begin with inspiration and then move to stupidity.I am going to print one of the most eloquent items I have read on the Katrina disaster and it comes from Democratic mayoral candidate J. Richard Gray:
A WAKE UP CALL
“New Orleans has given us a wake up call to the reality of human suffering brought about by economic and racial injustice in our cities. Lancaster must be a City that is known not for its willingness to simply tolerate racial and class differences, but by the actions we take to bring dignity, opportunity, and a good quality of life to all who live here. The Gray Administration will be committed to policies that support economic, social and racial justice. All City services and resources will be shared equally by all residents in every neighborhood in the City – regardless of economic status, class or race.In addition to sharing the economic benefits of City projects, we will make sure that a positive police presence is visible in every neighborhood. We will have a fully implemented Community Police Program. The City-wide Community Policing that has long been promised is long overdue.”
Entered into the “Find the stupidest thing G. Terry Madonna says” contest:
“You can’t take 30 percent of the electorate out of the equations.”
G. Terry Madonna regarding the Hispanic vote from the New Era article, “Can Gray grab Hispanic vote from mayor?” 9-9-05.
Mind-bogglingly dumb quote of the week:
“After the meeting, the mayor, who is a pharmacist, said that if staff is cut, such basic things as distributing medicine could be affected.”
Dave Hennigan regarding the sale of Conestoga View in his Sunday New’s column, “Clyde can’t figure sale of county home,” 9-10-05.
Most arrogant quote of the week:
“This time I’ve gone too far, they said.Which is pretty much what they say every week.”
Gil Smart speaking of his previous column regarding hurricane Katrina in his Sunday New’s column, “Before you learn from mistakes, you must admit you made them,” 9-10-05.
Most condescending quote of the week:
And that, dear readers, is the difference between me and my right-wing correspondents.”
Gil Smart from the same column that is directly above.
Does the reporter have a brain or memory awardof the week and possibly year:

THE “CABLE GUY” HAS HIS HEARING TODAY FOR TRESPASSING ON MAYOR SMITHGALL’S PROPERTY… STAY TUNED!!!
*** BREAKING NEWS ***
This website has been overwhelmed with emails demanding the Intell headline, “Boyfriend grieves the woman he shot dead,” win the “Worst Headline of the Week” award! The writers are shocked that I would even consider “It’s a Wang thang.”This is a tough call.Stay tuned…
*** BREAKING NEWS ***
“It’s a Wang thang,” today’s Intell, has been entered into this week’s “Worst Headline of the Week” Contest.(I’m glad I’m not a Wang!)
DR. FRAUD WILL KICK HIS BUTT
GO POUND SAND, DR. EVIL
Rarely, rarely, am I this flabbergasted. Please read, or better yet, don’t read Jeff Hawke’s column in this morning’s Intell, “Wild card in mayor race?Dr. Evil.”This is simply dreadful and wouldn’t get past an editor at a college or high school newspaper. And not to brag, but I think this is rip-off of my own, lovable and mentally challenged (“I see rabbits”) Dr. Fraud.I’m sure the good doctor will be in touch with me over this.I see steam rising from his head…. Oh, no!Trouble’s coming….
Speaking of the soon to be departed mayor, he turns 60 today.Happy birthday and it’s time to kick back and put your feet up.You’ll have plenty of time to do that when the citizens of Lancaster force you into retirement. You’ll enjoy it, Charlie!
DARK SECRETS THAT ARE SECRET NO LONGER
On a serious note, please click here for a story on the New York Jet’s Laveranves Coles.Good for him.The only way to stop incest/sexual abuse is to prosecute it and make people aware of it.Good job.

WHY CAN’T I WRITE THIS GOOD – PART 2
“The most successful mass political movement of our time is now marked primarily by its petulance and narcissism. Its intellectual tradition dumbed down to the point that it resembles professional wrestling, it confuses recklessness with strength, ideology with reality.”
Gil Smart, “Receding floodwaters reveal waterlogged point of view,” Sunday News, 9-17-05
“And I whined, because I didn’t like the picture of me:Her response:‘Bob is NOT going to look at YOU.’ Oh, Diane.Such bluntness.”
Particia Poist, “Swan has star power, but is it enough?” Sunday News, 9-17-05
COMING LATER TODAY – “Arrogance and Ignorance”
AXIS OF EVIL
A BRAIN TRANSPLANT
I am switching up today because Jeff Hawke’s column still has me so flabbergasted (see “Dr. Fraud Will Kick His Butt,” below) that I can’t concentrate. And Mayor Smithgall’s advisor, Jesse Yescalis, obviously needs a brain transplant.Hawke’s column says, “Yescalis said Gray, ‘spent the last 30 years getting criminals out of jail.’”How did he do that?Does he have a key to the jail? Why didn’t he get Jon Eichelman out before he was assaulted?Did the prosecutors lie down in the courtroom or did they say to Gray, “You’re such a hell of a guy, we’ll go easy and let this guy walk?”Please, tell us how you did it, Rick.
I don’t see Hawke’s column posted online, so I just have to reprint a very small portion of it here.If I ever write like this, someone, please shoot me.Seriously, please shoot me.In my “Tribune Days” series I have an episode coming up called, “I wrote crap!”My editor called me on it and when I realized he was right and I had written crap, I offered to quit on the spot.He talked me out of it and then I realized it was all his fault in the first place, which is neither here nor there, because not only is this dreadful crap but it is also in extremely bad taste.
“No, stealing an election is not quite evil enough,” Dr. Evil responds.“It’s semievil, it’s quasi-evil, it’s the margarine of evil, it’s the Diet Coke of evil, just one calorie, not evil enough.
“No,” Dr. Evil continues, “what I have in mind is something truly evil.Mu-ha-ha-ha!”
“Are we going to fly a plane into a skyscraper?” suggests Osama bin Laden.
“No,” Dr. Evil replies, “not quite evil enough.”
Dr. Fraud has contacted me, and while he is fuming, he is also concerned about the author, “an obvious nut-job” in his words. He said he is very apprehensive that this person is roaming freely among an unsuspecting public.“You never know what he might do,” Dr. Fraud wrote. There will be more on this at a later time…
“I WANT THE POLICE TO LEAVE ME ALONE”
To catch up on some outstanding business, the “Worst Headline of the Week” winner is “Boyfriend grieves the woman he shot dead,” Intell, 9-15-05.The seriousness of the subject and the absurdity of the headline itself, moved it well ahead of the other unthinkable contender, “It’s a Wang thang,” Intell, 9-16-05.Both of the articles were as absurd as their headlines.
The boyfriend never explains why his finger got anywhere near the trigger of the shotgun.Instead he is quoted as saying “I want the police to leave me alone and let me grieve.”What? He didn’t say “Interrogate and arrest me now?”So far, the police appear to be doing exactly what he wants. And Yescalis blamed Gray for letting criminals on the street.
The article on the Wangs was childish and downright embarrassing.I feel sorry for the Wang family, who sound like very nice people, so I will leave it at that.
I am overwhelmed by the amount of news and my lack of time.So today will be very short and I will try to catch up this weekend. Most importantly, there is a debate tonight between mayoral candidates Rick Gray and Charlie Smithgall at the Lancaster Theological Seminary Refectory at According to their press release, the topics will include housing, employment, the convention center, hate crimes and “specifically how to eliminate racism, sexism, heterosexism, and anti-Semitism in LancasterCity.”Wow!And it’s moderated by none other than Dr. G. Terry Madonna. This is going to be good! Now, I’m off to look up “heterosexism” and try to find out why it is such a rampant problem in Lancaster.
VIABLE AND VIBRANT
One thought prompted by today’s Intell article, “Fry quits convention center authority:” the convention center in Scranton just went bankrupt. The one in Pittsburgh is in terrible economic trouble.Hershey and Philadelphia have convention centers. The need for convention center space is declining. Those who oppose the LancasterConvention Center are not “naysayers who lack vision.”Rather, they are trying to save Lancaster from making a huge, huge mistake. The Lancaster County Convention Center Authority has spent 15 million. It’s time to pull the plug.Stop now before any more money goes down the drain. Please give Lancaster a viable and vibrant future.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY & BYE
John M. Spidaliere, the New Era reporter who is up against the Sunday New’s Partricia Poist in the “Do they have a brain?” contest, covered the opening of Mayor Charlie Smithgall’s campaign headquarters yesterday and made a point of saying that he was 59-years-old.You see, the day before, on Tuesday, I wished the soon to be departed mayor a happy birthday. Now folks, I try to get my facts straight. If you go here, you will see that on the mayor’s own website, it says his birthday is September 20th but being celebrated on the 25th.So, John, either the mayor doesn’t know his own birthday or he was 60-years-old when he opened his campaign headquarters yesterday.
IT WAS AN ACCIDENT
And in Spidaliere’s article, “Mayor’s 3rd term targets:drugs, slums, gangs,” which was not posted online, he says, “Smithgall stressed that since he became mayor, serious crime has dropped 65 percent, according to state police statistics.”If you will recall, Spidaliere’s article from May saying the FBI said crime had dropped by 20% is right on the mayor’s own website. So I hope Charlie brings those state police statistics with him to the debate.Maybe he accomplished the 45% decrease in four months by ordering the Lancaster police to rule everything an accident rather than a crime. Not only does it lower the crime statistics, it saves a lot of money too!
A PIECE OF WORK
Finally, I was not the only one offended by Jeff Hawkes’ “Dr. Evil” column. In fact, it was included in the press release from the Lancaster Seminary about tonight’s debate and described as “Hawkes’ piece of work.”Does Hawkes apologize? No.In his column today he goes after the very safe topic he knows will get readers hyped up – the lawmaker’s pay raise, and Mike Sturla in particular. He is incensed because Sturla criticized the media. You deserve criticism Hawkes. When you make a mistake you admit it and apologize.
Tomorrow, I will discuss the problem of heterosexism in Lancaster and what can be done to combat it.Wow!
DISBAND THE LCCCA – IT’S OVER
“For reasons that are not clear to me, you have requested that I immediately submit my resignation as a member of the Authority,” F&M College President John A. Fry quoted in this morning’s Intell.“I don’t believe in serving on boards where I am not wanted.”It’s getting downright nasty and embarrassing.Disband the LCCCA.The convention center is history.Stop wasting taxpayer money. It’s over.Do away with the LCCCA.End it now.
Science vs. religion disquiets small Pa. town
(By Kathy Boccella, Philadelphia Inquirer, 9-26-05)
It started with a textbook.
In June 2004, a Dover, PA., school board member criticized the district’s biology text for offering too much “Darwinsim” and suggested it adopt a new one that would teach creationism as well as evolution.
What started out as a curriculum review turned into a firestorm in the small, rural community near York, when the school board decided to introduce “intelligent design” – which holds that life on earth was the product of a higher force – in ninth grade biology.
In a trial that starts today in federal court in Harrisburg, the American Civil Liberties Union will ask the judge to order the district to cut intelligent design from the curriculum.
The debate in this 3,600 student district has set neighbor against neighbor, divided the school community and polarized the town, thick with churches and whose main street cuts through a mix of farms, housing developments and a new strip shopping center.
“It was imprudence, presumption and triumphalism, all wrapped up in a blood-red bow.”
Gil Smart, “Time to pitch the ideology and go with what works,” Sunday News
“Life’s not always a big happy parade when you are in public office.”
Patricia Poist, “Pay raise rains on legislator’s parades,” Sunday News
“In that effort, the commissioners are spending hundreds of thousands of county taxpayer dollars in attorney fees and are rejecting the help of community leaders, most recently philanthropist Judy Ware and college president John Fry, both of whom they forced off the convention center board.
“…But it’s not too much to ask that they stop spending taxpayer dollars in misguided efforts that harm, not help, the city.”
New Era Editorial, “County’s missteps hurt city progress,” 9-23-05
