EMAIL DICK AND MOLLY
I’m going to keep this very short today. Please, please read the email below that was sent out by Commissioners Dick Shellenberger and Molly Henderson in response to Dave Hennigan’s column in the Sunday News, “Clyde can only ask, ‘But why?’” (Click here for the article and Talkback below it.) Please also see below that for my response to his column. Please email the Commissioners and let them know you support their actions. Their email addresses are: Dick Shellenberger - ShellenD@co.lancaster.pa.us or shllnbrgr@dejazzed.com; Molly Henderson – hendersm@co.lancaster.pa.us or MollyHenderson02@aol.com.
The following was posted by a Talkbacker under the thread to the New Era article of 9-27-05, “Senator: Proposal may kill center”: “It seems that an accurate litmus test regarding the C.C. these days is simple. The degree of agitation expressed by Gib, Boss Hogg, Shaub or Sturla is proportional to the degree that I'm sure the 2 sensible commissioners are trying to do what's right for the taxpayers.” Not to mention the degree of agitation shown by the Lancaster Newspapers. Hennigan harped for the last month about the sale of Conestoga View. A Talkbacker offered that this was a red herring to take people’s attention away from the convention center and an attempt to make the Commissioners look badly. I think the poster was right. The sale went through and this Sunday’s paper was nothing but an unconscionable push for the convention center.
I was reminded today that the only way Dick and Molly have to get their word out is through emails, because, of course, the Lancaster Newspapers are a partner in the convention center. But they also have the support of this website, Artie See has their email posted as well as other extremely important information at www.lookingatlancaster.com, and the Lanco Yokel, http://lancoyokels.blogspot.com/, has an excellent response to Hennigan’s column. Let the commissioners know you support their actions. Please email Dick and Molly.
[The answer to “Which one is Charlie?” will come tomorrow. Most of you have picked the correct image, but please note that this was never announced as a contest. There will not be a “winner” and there will not be a free lunch! Get a grip folks. I’m not made of money (unlike the PSP and Charlie!)]
Email “but why”
Re: Lancaster County Convention Center – Taxpayer Protections.
Dear Friends:
During the several months that have passed since our last e-mail, the Board of County Commissioners has continued to be active in protecting citizen interests concerning the hotel/convention center proposal. Recent statements by the Editors and Columnists of the Lancaster Newspapers suggest an effort to forget why the Board has acted. So we hope you will be interested in this brief e-mail summarizing our personal views, unfiltered by Lancaster Newspapers, one of the private partners in the hotel/convention center deal. For ease of distribution, this joint e-mail has been sent from Molly to Dick, with a “bcc” to you. If you are not interested in this topic, please hit “delete” and accept our apologies for any inconvenience.
We entered office supportive of the idea of a private hotel/public convention center, but opposed to the $60 million County guarantee. If the project truly was as viable as supporters claimed, such a guarantee was unnecessary. Our concerns were increased greatly when Penn Square Partners refused to answer a single one of the “57 Questions” we posed in response to their request for exemption for the private hotel from County real estate tax. The “Twelve Points for Taxpayer Protection” were intended to be a starting point for a compromise to move the project forward with a reasonable sharing of public and private risk. These “Twelve Points” are attached to this email. We believe you will find them reasonable. Once again, Penn Square Partners refused to discuss or negotiate these points.
Penn Square Partners refused to delay demolition of the historic buildings and purchase of the Watt & Shand building for $6.8 million until bids and financing for the project were in place. To the contrary, project supporters suggested that even before bids and financing, the County-guaranteed LCCCA debt (which at the moment is owed to a single bank holding the loan proceeds in escrow) should be issued to thousands and thousands of public bondholders. This would vastly increase the risk to taxpayers.
With no response to the reasonable suggestions made by the County Commissioners, the Board has continued to examine the legality of the financing, appoint an independent voice on the LCCCA Board, protect the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Visitor Bureau’s marketing efforts and taken other reasonable actions.
We welcome any comments and questions you may have on this or any other matter. For example, the sale of Conestoga View has been much in the news. Please be assured that the sale price was based upon appraised value and that protections were built in to assure continued indigent care in a way that will provide equal care and less cost to the taxpayers. We welcomed the public input to the process which resulted in an improved arrangement.
Thank you.
Dick Shellenberger

-Resign, Hennigan –
BUT WHY, CLYDE?
I can’t keep up. That’s been my thought for the last two weeks. The mayor, the DA, the Lancaster Police, the President of Franklin & Marshall College, State Senator Gibson Armstrong and the Lancaster Newspapers. I can’t keep up with the outrageous things they are doing.
And when you don’t think they could possibly go lower, they do. Jack Buckwalter, the Chairman of Lancaster Newspapers must have called Dave Hennigan into his office. “It’s not going well, Dave. People seem to be learning the truth about the hotel/convention center. Our chance to make a huge bundle of money off the clueless residents of this city and county are going up in smoke. Do something, Dave. Make one last, desperate effort.”
Thus we have, “Clyde can only ask, ‘But why?’” in today’s Sunday News. Now Clyde is not the smartest rabbit to come down the pike. He asks of Commissioners Dick Shellenberger and Molly Henderson, “Why are they so strongly opposed to the convention center project?”
Here’s a clue, Clyde. It’s a white elephant. You understand elephants, don’t you Clyde? Would you pay 6.8 million for a building valued at 1.3 million, Clyde? Would you spend $135 million of the public’s money on a losing proposition, Clyde?
Then, Clyde talks about splitting the hotel and excise taxes, “Very frankly, Mr. Editor, this sounds as though somebody else, perhaps someone with a legal mind, suggested the division.” Oh, no! Not someone with a legal mind. The last thing the Lancaster Newspapers want is someone looking at this project who has a legal mind. They might see a flaw or five hundred flaws.
And then Clyde says, “And nobody had anything good to say about the two commissioners, either.” You don’t read your own Talkback Board do you, Clyde? Can you read, Clyde? And in the most outrageous statement of all, Clyde goes on to say, “Included were calls for them to resign.” Those calls, which were totally ignored, came from the mayor and Senator Gib Armstrong as a result of your papers, Clyde. See, the Intell used “unnamed sources” to levy slanderous and ridiculous charges against Shellenberger.
Henningan, the tired, old hack, asks Clyde, “Where does it end, Clyde?” It ends now, Hennigan. The convention center is dead. Why don’t you run up to Jack Buckwalter’s office and tell him that. The convention center is dead.
COMING TOMORROW – THE ANSWER TO WHICH ONE IS CHARLIE!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY & OTHER THINGS
Well, I went on Talkback this morning and it’s Cate’s birthday today (happy birthday!) And that reminded me of last year at this time when my website was brand new. I had just been “banned” so I “talked back” on my website. And on Cate’s birthday last year, what I posted is below (it’s still there at http://www.lipnews.com/gpage.html1.html). And while I’m speaking of the “old” site – an amazing number of people still go there. So below the “Talkback,” I’m posting the “search string” for LIP News for the month of August. Why? Because I find it fascinating. Someone was hunting for my mother and I’m sure Smart will be pleased to see he made it again. More on all of this later.
[P.S. Please see below this to see which “character” you think looks the most like Mayor Smithgall. I will announce the decision tomorrow along with an explanation of why I can’t use a “real” picture of the mayor!]

Do you have a medical or psychiatric degree? "Prone to breaks in reality." Because I am involved in litigation, I have been tested by the best - and no, I am not "prone to breaks in reality." Is that a medical or psychiatric term?
Yes, I am angry. I think I have a right to be. I am trying to channel that anger into educating people.
Thank you for reviewing my posts. If some were "edgy," perhaps there was a reason (you're reading this aren't you?) Did you read my post under "Tomato blight, rose slugs and a creative mole solution?"
P.S. Stay out of Conestoga!

A lawsuit has been filed. That makes it a legitimate story no matter what. In fact, you should be upset that you are not getting "all the news that's fit to print" from LNP and question why.
I disagree that there are articles about incest all the time. Name the last five movies/TV programs/newspaper or magazine articles you have seen about it.
Please read my story and see what I found out about my myself and my family and then make your decision about my credibility..
Cate
I would get this printed in People Magazine if I could. This is not a "family's dirty laundry." This was a CRIME that destroys people's lives. My father should have spent time in jail.
I am writing a book. It will begin as a nice love story ("Charlie's Promise" for those of you who have read the paper) and then take some less nice turns. I am not embarrassed nor ashamed of this. People need to know.
P.S. Happy Birthday.

Sorry about the misspelling of your name previously. Yes, I was a reporter for the Lancaster Sunday News and I'm going to give you more details a little later when I have more time.
