BUMMER FOR LOIS HERR AND PATRICK SNYDER! HOORAY FOR THE DEMOCRATS! LET’S CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF THIS WAR.
Once again, the storm has knocked out my internet service (hint to Ron Harper – I’m at a friend’s computer!). Please check back most likely tomorrow for the promised stories. Stay dry! Change is on the way!
*** BREAKING NEWS ***
POLLS OPEN UNTIL 9:00 P.M.
I spoke with Greg Paulson, Lois Herr’s Campaign Manager, at 2:00 p.m. He says the turnout appears to be lower than it should be.
He said that at no polling place in the city are there signs or greeters for Swann, Santorum or Pitts. He said they appear to have written the city off.
The New Era posted this morning at 11:14 a.m. that of 136 people they asked in exit polls – Mike Sturla has a 2-1 margin over Republican Patrick Snyder. It’s interesting they focused on this particular race.
The polls are open until 9:00 p.m. If you have hesitated to vote because of the problems, please vote. They are being resolved.
*** BREAKING NEWS ***
I spoke to Greg Paulson, Lois Herr’s Campaign Manager, at 10:10 a.m. by phone. He said they have reports of 23 broken voting machines. He said the scanners are down on those machines. He also has some unverified reports that some of the electronic machines were in “test” mode not “vote” mode. He said at some polling places the Judges of Elections are collecting the paper ballots and plan to scan them later. What a mess! Please check back later for an update.

HERR & SNYDER
A respected Muslim cleric in Thailand calls the Saddam case "the problem of America and its domestic politics." He said "Maybe Bush will use this case to tell the voters that Saddam is dead and that the Americans are safe." But as he puts it, "actually the American people will be in more danger with the death of Saddam."

SNYDER IN THE 96TH!
I like Pat Snyder and that’s a very good thing because Representative Mike Sturla simply has to go (please click on the link to “Throw the Bum Out” in the box above).
Snyder, Sturla’s Republican opponent for the 96th District, is having the last of his three town hall meetings tonight in the Lancaster Library, second floor, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. If you have not met Pat, please try to attend.
I have spoken to him twice by phone and I am impressed. He is strong and confident and never hesitated when asked a question. His website is here.
Does Snyder have a chance of winning? It sure looks like he does.
“Usually, you don’t give somebody almost $100,000 unless you think they have some reasonable chance of winning. They must have found something in the environment that makes them believe they can make a competition out of this race.”
F&M’s G. Terry Madonna quoted in yesterday’s Intell article, “State GOP targets Sturla,” (click here).
Snyder is making a competition out of this race and if you consider the comments on the Lancaster Talkback board, Sturla doesn’t stand a chance of winning. People are truly disgusted with this man. The pay raise, his refusal to repay it and his refusal to identify the charity or charities he supposedly donated it to (it wasn’t yours to donate, Mike), the convention center and the specialized legislation he and Senator Gib Armstrong worked together on to pass, his failure to help the School District of Lancaster and his outright arrogance are just the beginning of the reasons this bum should be thrown out.
Sturla said the constant barrage of pay-raise talk during this year's election has overshadowed debates on issues that have "bigger" consequences -- health care, property- tax reduction and public education funding.
"I wish they would concentrate their effort on what impacts people's lives," Sturla said.
“Candidates play nice for AMVETS event,” Intell, October 23, 2006 (click here).
What about decency, integrity, honesty and following the law, Mike?
A Talkbacker responded to those comments by Sturla this way:
Yeah Mike, I agree. I also wish you would have concentrated on those same issues instead of stealing our money in the middle of the night. Idiot.
And the following was posted on Talkback under the article, “Sturla rally courts Latino voters,” Intell, October 30, 2006 (click here).
The pay hike is among the least of the damage Sturla has done to PA. Calling the SDoL "drunken sailors" and "crack addicts" after threatening to cut the school district's future funding, which Sturla did. Supporting Act 23, and working overtime to require City taxpayers to pay taxes on the PSP's proposed hotel. And on and on and on...
Pat Snyder is a member of Lancaster School Board and voted against the PSP’s “TIF” proposal. He says that he is against the way the hotel/convention center is being financed.
Please attend his meeting tonight and vote for Republican (gasp!) Pat Snyder in the 96th next Tuesday!
Tomorrow - the County Commissioners will appeal (yeah!), Mayor Gray is a super, super jerk and Lois Herr gets more endorsements. Wow!
I LIKE PAT SNYDER?
PLEASE CHECK BACK LATER TODAY…

(But Sturla’s a Bum)
LOIS HERR IN THE 16TH!
“In the 1960s, Lois Kathryn Herr left her job as a seventh-grade English teacher and entered the ranks of AT&T, where in unprecedented ways she helped awaken the corporate giant to its injustices against women. What she and others accomplished by the early seventies would raise the standard of treatment of women in corporations throughout the United States. Yet in the beginning, Herr knew little of the burgeoning women's movement. Here she tells about her growing feminist awareness and her career as an activist who remained loyal to her company while effecting positive change.”
Editorial Review of Lois Herr’s book, “Women, Power and AT&T: Winning Rights in the Workplace,” available here.
Lois Herr is a remarkable woman. Her opponent, Joe Pitts, is the pits!
You can view Herr’s TV ads on her site (click here). WGAL-TV is featuring the race (click here). The National Farmers Union just endorsed Herr. Please also note the two upcoming events:

THROW THE BUM OUT!
“I am curious to see the results of the elections in 2 weeks, especially the Sturla race. The results will be another benchmark to show if the convention center opposition has enough legs to get the changes made that have been discussed.”
Posted on Talkback under the article, “Major court victory for city center.”
I believe you are absolutely correct. Throw the bum out! Tell them "NO" to the convention center. There will be more on this tomorrow and it’s not just slots, folks – hit me again!
~ Throw the Bums Out! ~
I’m cranky and cold today - so it looks like a good time to discuss the lowest of the low – Representative Joe (he’s the pits!) Pitts and Mayor Rick Gray.
“Mayor Rick Gray said that while he was unaware of the old marquee’s fate, he wasn’t surprised it was coming down.
“It is not going to be known as the Watt & Shand convention center, so it might make sense to take it down,” Gray said this morning.
“Sign of Change,” yesterday’s New Era (click here).
It might make sense to kick your sorry butt out of office too, Rick. Nice the way you stay on top of things.
What will the convention center be called, Rick? Isn’t that in the $20 million you found in two weeks (gasp!) to help the private sector rape the people of Lancaster County? Was it $1 million or $2 million for the naming rights, Rick? What will the white elephant be called?
Pitts also traveled to Dallas, Texas, to speak at a conference held by the conservative group Wallbuilders in October of 2005. Wallbuilders, which paid $544, seeks "to exert a direct and positive influence in government, education, and the family by educating the nation concerning the Godly foundation of our country (and) providing information to federal, state, and local officials as they develop public policies which reflect Biblical values," according to the group's Web site.
“Lawmakers’ financial filings are only a click away,” yesterday’s New Era (not posted online).

We do know, however, that on top of his salary of $165,200, Pitts receives $90,867 a year in pension from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for his 24 years as a state House member. (That level of "outside income" ranks 20th among House and Senate members, the CRP says.)
From the same New Era article noted above.
It’s time to throw the bum out! Vote for Lois Herr in the 16th Congressional District (www.loisherr.us ).
The NEA Fund for Children & Public Education has announced its endorsement of Lois Herr for US Congress (PA-16th), citing Herr’s “commitment to public education and children.” The NEA Fund is the political action committee of the National Education Association (NEA), which is the largest professional employee organization in the country and represents 2.7 million educators in all 50 states.
In November, Herr will oppose incumbent Representative Joe Pitts. Pitts has been rated at only 8% by the NEA in the recent past, denoting an anti-public education voting record.

Before I go to throw darts at a picture of Timothy Smedick, executive director of the Lancaster County Historic Preservation Trust, this reminder from Pat Snyder’s website (www.patsnyder06.com):
The September 28th debate between Pat Snyder and Mike Sturla will air in its entirety on Monday Oct 16th during the 12:30 segment of Noonday On Eight.
Pay the money back, Sturla. Hopefully WGAL will also run the Herr-Pitts debate in its entirety. I will try to find out.
Yikes! A bull’s eye! Where’s that picture of Sturla? I have one of Sturla and Gray together? Yahoo!
Stay warm and please check back on Monday.

(This email just received from Jerry Policoff.)
~ Go, Lois, Go! ~
LOIS KICKS PITTS’ BUTT
(He's the pits!)
I just returned from the Herr/Pitts debate at the monthly meeting of the Rotary Club.
I know I am biased, but I have to tell you, Lois kicked Joe Pitts’ butt. He stumbled several times, was called on the carpet by the moderator for citing discredited religious right propaganda on why adult stem cell research is more promising than embryonic stem cell research and responded by simply repeating the discredited research, etc. etc.
He also actually indicated that things are going rather well in Iraq. (Perhaps our group can venture over there for tea and crumpets sometime). We were sitting right up front and he was visibly sweating. Meanwhile Lois was calm, collected, articulate and well-informed, and came armed with her sense of humor. I think I can confidently say that she won the debate by several lengths and probably won a lot of votes in this large hall that was packed with influential people from all over the district.
The media, including WGAL, was also there, and hopefully some good coverage will come out of this. WGAL recorded the event, so perhaps they’ll even find a slot to air it in its entirety.
More tomorrow. Thank you Jerry.
~ Rally For The People ~
I am so disturbed by today’s lead story (see the box immediately below), that I will keep the rest of today’s post very short and have the other promised stories tomorrow.
Please remember the “Rally for the People” tonight in Binn’s Park beginning at 5:00 p.m. There will be music, food, the Governor and other Democratic candidates and it’s free (except the food)!
“Lois Herr, candidate for the Pennsylvania 16th District Congressional seat, will take this opportunity to call for the Bush Administration to bring the troops home from Iraq, and will charge the Bush Administration, with Rep. Joe Pitts’ consistent support, of squandering the country’s assets on a failed policy. Her speech will be based on her Iraq position paper, which can be found on the Herr for Congress website at www.loisherr.us - On the Issues – Iraq.”
“She is also expected to challenge Rep. Pitts to a debate on the Iraq War, on health care, and other issues of paramount concern to voters in the 16th Congressional District.”
Press release from Lois Herr for Congress
You go, Lois! You, go! Support Lois tonight in Binn’s Park and help vote Joe (he’s the pits) Pitts out of office!
