~ “Talkback Addict” ~
IN A DRAWER
“Lancaster County commissioners on Tuesday launched an internal investigation to find out how roughly $1 million worth of checks sent to the county’s assessment office ended up in an employee’s file drawer instead of the bank.”
Today’s Intell, “County finds checks,” click here.
I know how they ended up in a file drawer and so do most Talkbackers. The employee, Dave Straub, was a “Talkback addict” on the Lancaster Online’s Talkback Board. He was in their overall top ten posters list for years. Until recently, he posted as eurytopic.
He, at least several years ago, made no pretense about who he was and who he worked for. He had his real name under his posts for several years.
I used to wonder how he could post all day and have a job, especially with the county. He couldn't, is the answer. His posts were intelligent and witty and informative. He must be an internet addict as well, because he linked to sites often and referenced visiting many blogs and sites on a daily basis. He loves the Simpsons.
He is, according to his posts, in his late twenties and has been living in a committed relationship with his girlfriend for over five years. They had recently purchased a house in the city.
Gil Smart did a front page piece on his parents who moved from New York to live in the area and be closer to their son. Smart’s article focused on the availability and moderate price of housing in the county.
Recently he all but stopped posting. He changed his screen name to “fishbulb” and one poster on August 9, 2006 even started a thread about him that read “What happened to?” and he asked “Eurytopic? Did I sleep through something? Dave, where are ya man?”
Oh, my. Who knows? Maybe he realized it had caught up with him over the past five years. There appears to be a conflict between the above story and a story on Ron Harper’s website regarding whether Straub resigned when caught or had previously given his two weeks notice.
It’s a shame – the internet and forums are addictive. But someone, someone in that county office should have realized that Straub wasn’t doing his job and hadn’t been for years. It never should have gone on for this long. Someone at the county needs to be held accountable, and Straub, at the very least, needs to seek professional help. What a sad ending for a seemingly very nice guy.
There will be more later today…
Eurytopic – what were you doing? (Or not doing)?
Wow! – A Judge meets and the Gov. Rocks!
Please check back later today...
~ Where’s the Story? ~
WHERE’S THE STORY?
I have been informed, anonymously, that former county employee Dave Straub was not involved in a relationship nor living with anyone when the $1 million in uncashed checks were found in his drawer (please see “$1 MILLION IN A DRAWER” below on this site). I cannot independently confirm this information.
Which raises the huge question – where is the Lancaster Newpapers’ coverage of this? Where is it? Why aren’t they telling us who he is and where he came from and how he got his job? There were over 200 uncashed checks totaling more than $1 million dollars according to WGAL. They are also reporting cash was found and that the District Attorney’s office and a county detective are investigating. Where is the follow-up Lancaster Newspapers?
I have long thought that Straub was connected to or very close to someone at the Lancaster Newspapers. When a major water main broke and many parts of the city were without water, he knew very early that morning whether the Lancaster Newspaper offices had water or not and posted on Talkback to that effect.
Is that why the coverage has stopped? Does he know someone? Is it that he had close to 3,500 posts on their own Talkback board? Where is the coverage Lancaster Newspapers? This is a legitimate story that has people extremely interested and curious and it sells papers – and it’s their money!.
Where the hell is your coverage?
OOPS! HE DID IT AGAIN!
Where is your coverage Bernard Harris of the New Era? Yesterday he wrote, “Gray looking at new breed of special events” (click here). It covered a talk by Mayor Gray at a Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry breakfast meeting. Harris does not say one word about the convention center and yet WGAL quotes Gray as saying, “Gray also said he does not like the way the project is being funded but doesn't see a way to change that at this time,” (click here).
If you don’t like the fact that the public is paying for this white elephant to the tune of over $100 million dollars, then pull the plug mayor Gray. Pull the plug.
Once again I will link to the article, “Soon Every Town in America Will Have an Unused Convention Center” – click here. Why do I “like” this so much? Because it’s from May of this year and it’s from someone in the hotel business who knows of what he speaks. It’s common sense and he has obviously seen this nonsense destroy many towns. Please pull the plug, Mayor Gray.
And where was your coverage of this Harris? You didn’t think it was important? What terrible journalism and a secret agenda. It’s a disgrace.
“Lindy Biechler’s killer should be nervous today,” Cindy Stauffer of the New Era wrote on June 16, 2006 in the article, “Probers to killer: We’re getting closer.”
It’s been over two months, Cindy. Where’s your follow-up with the District Attorney and County Detective Joseph Geesey? That’s what reporters do – follow-up. Did you think you could get a families’ hopes up this way and then pretend it never happened (please see “IT’S BEEN WAY TOO LONG” below on this site). It is this type of reporting, or lack there of, that has allowed the unsolved murders and corruption to go on in Lancaster for years.
PUT THEM IN JAIL!
There will be more on the District Attorney and County Detective Geesey tomorrow. Their behavior and the whole situation in today’s Intell article, “CEO bidding on prison job has record,” (click here), is unbelievable, pathetic, and sad for the citizens of Lancaster County. Put Totaro and Geesey in prison- and Warden Guarini too.
Also tomorrow, Ernie Schrebier and Jack Brubaker go lower than even I believed possible. Put them both on the next train out of Lancaster - after tarring and feathering them!

“No money was misappropriated and no one has determined why Straub kept the checks in his desk. Straub has an unlisted telephone number and could not be reached for comment.”
“Taking full blame (kind of),” this week's Sunday News by Patricia Poist (click here).
This is simply unbelievable. Weeks after over 800 uncashed checks were found in his drawer, there has not been a word about Dave Straub.
We know why they were in his desk, Patricia. He was posting on your own newspaper forum all day long. Why don’t you look it up? Why didn’t you tell readers that?
If these papers had any competition we would have seen a picture of him, know who Straub’s ex-girlfriend is and who his first grade teacher was by now. They would have read every one of the almost 3,500 posts Straub made on Talkback and what time of day they were made. They would tell you that Straub posted that he was a member of the Libertarian Party and an atheist and liked beer.
So, he has an unlisted number. Then any reporter in the world would sit outside his house until he came out. They would call his parents (you could just ask Gil Smart for the number, Patricia, after all, he did a story on Straub’s parents).
I called his parent’s house on Sunday afternoon and Mrs. Straub told me politely that they have “no comment” and hung up.
This is the worst reporting I have ever seen. Yes, usually it’s bad but is there a reason for this news blackout? Does his ex-girlfriend, Brooke, work for the Lancaster Newspapers?
As I noted here when this story first broke, I received several anonymous emails requesting I correct that he and his girlfriend live in a house in the city. They apparently had broken up – and that may be when Straub stopped posting nearly as much on Talkback and changed his screen name from “eurytopic” to “fishbulb.” He also changed his member signature to “I am disrespectful to dirt!” Interesting.
When I asked the emailer how I knew what I was being told was true, I received this email:
“You are trusting your memory right now, about something you think you remember from a while ago. I am confirming it, and if you do some digging, you can probably confirm it with other sources as well. I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job, but if you are an LNP reader (and I believe you are), you may remember an article on Dave Straub's parents moving to the area from Long Island. Or, if you don't remember, at least you can do an archive search on Dave Straub's name and see what turns up. Anyway, you would then see that [deleted] and [deleted] Straub moved to Ephrata, Pa., and then the next step would be to see if they have a listed phone number, by going to anywho.com. Once you find the phone number, you can call his parents and ask them straight out if there son is still involved with his girlfriend of many years. But this is just one example of the many ways you can confirm what I am saying is true.”
A second grader could have done a better investigation than Poist. Where is the information on Straub?
Next week, I will sit outside his house and wait for him.
Two other quick and obvious notes – what an incredibly stupid headline and how the hell do they know “no money was misappropriated?” They didn’t even “know” Straub didn’t do a lick of work for over three years!
There will be more tomorrow…
~ Does Straub Have One? ~
“Gil's a friendly acquaintance of mine. He absorbs a LOT of hate mail here in hyper-paleo-conservative Lancaster County, PA. Keep an eye on his weekly column for some of the fallout.
"Conscience is the most sacred of all property."
Believe it or not, this is Straub’s signature line under his profile for this website (click here)! How was his conscience on June the 28th of this year when he was in attendance at the Lancaster County Board of Assessment Appeals meeting (click here)?
Speaking as a Lancaster, PA resident whose girlfriend once baby-sat Tommy Herr's kids, I don't think he has anything to do with Herr's snack foods.
That said, also speaking as a transplanted Mets fan, I too was disgusted by his awful play during his not-nearly-short-enough tenure in royal and orange. A least with Glavine, as others have noted, you have a situation where a pitcher who gets by almost solely on guile is being mashed by a team that knows all his tricks from playing behind him.
Posted by Dave Straub on August 3, 2003 (click here)
Well, at least he made this post on a Sunday! On the site I linked to yesterday (click here), Straub was posting on a Monday morning at 9:01 a.m. and 9:13 a.m. about beer! Did he have the day off?
“North Babylon (NY) High School '92.
It's on the south shore of Long Island. about a third of the way out east from NYC.
My girlfriend (Hempfield '93) is jealous because I don't constantly run into people with whom I went to school.
Lancaster, PA “
Posted by Straub on the LOL Talkback thread about where you graduated from High School
And speaking of the Talkback Board, where Straub has almost 3,500 posts – most of them during work hours, what is going on and why doesn’t the “LOL Czar” tell us? Hmmmm. Mayabe he did pick a good name...
That will come on Monday along with a look at the Lancaster Newspaper’s bizarre new website “717 the pulse.”
Have a nice weekend.
*** BREAKING NEWS ***
Dave Straub, the county employee with over 800 checks in his desk drawer and who posted on the Lancaster Newspaper forum Talkback, was posting everywhere! *** BREAKING NEWS ***
“I have known Phil Rainey for many years, and he is beyond reproach. Being chosen as the scapegoat for an incompetent FORMER employee is absurd, and everyone who worked with Phil in the county government can see the truth. FACTOID ... Steve MacDonald spent $100,000 of our taxes to redecorate his office. Why wasn't he tarred and feathered?? VOTE people ... you get one chance in the voting booth to make your voice heard.”
Just posted by new poster “facts101” on the Talkback Board. Dave, it’s nice of you to defend your former boss and your ex-girlfriend, but don’t you think you should tell us why you did it? What’s up, Dave? You’re hurting a lot of people. Come clean. Dave.
